Elegance at the track: celebrating the spirit of the Kentucky Derby with nature-inspired style.
There is a specific kind of magic that settles over the world as we approach the first Saturday in May. It’s a mixture of anticipation, history, and a deep, soulful respect for the most majestic creatures on earth. Here at Abood Elegant Journeys, we live for these moments: the ones where tradition meets a heartbeat. With the Kentucky Derby 2026 just a few days away on May 2nd, I’ve found myself spending a lot of time reflecting on what this race truly represents. It’s not just two minutes of thunderous hooves; it’s a celebration of a legacy that spans centuries.
As someone who feels most at home in a saddle, the Derby feels like a family reunion of sorts. It’s a time when the world stops to appreciate the Thoroughbred: a breed defined by its grit, its grace, and its unwavering spirit. Whether you’re planning your Derby party outfit or just want to feel connected to the power of these animals, I wanted to share a little bit of the history and the excitement surrounding this year’s "Run for the Roses."
The Legends Behind the Gate
Before we look at the stars of the Kentucky Derby 2026, we have to look back at the foundation they stand on. Every single Thoroughbred running this weekend traces its lineage back to three "foundation stallions" from the late 17th and early 18th centuries: the Darley Arabian, the Godolphin Arabian, and the Byerley Turk. It is incredible to think that the speed and stamina we see on the track today started with just three horses hundreds of years ago.
In America, we have our own legend: Lexington. Born in 1850, he became the most successful sire in the country’s history. If you look at the pedigree of almost any Triple Crown winner: 12 out of 13, to be exact: you’ll find Lexington’s name etched in their history. He is the grandfather of the American Thoroughbred, and his spirit still gallops through the veins of every horse that enters the starting gate at Churchill Downs.

When I'm out there on my horse, I can feel that connection. There’s a rugged, quiet understanding between a rider and a horse that is hard to put into words. It’s a journey we take together, one of trust and mutual respect. That’s why I started the Western Heritage Collection: to capture that feeling and turn it into a keepsake you can wear close to your heart.
The Contenders: Who to Watch This Saturday
This year’s field is particularly special. The energy around the barns is electric, and there are three horses that everyone is talking about. If you’re looking for a horse to root for, here’s the lowdown on the heavy hitters:
1. Renegade (4-1)
The morning-line favorite, Renegade, is what we call a "closer." He doesn't mind hanging back early in the race, letting the others tire themselves out before he makes a dramatic, heart-stopping run for the finish line. Trained by the legendary Todd Pletcher, he drew the #1 post position. It’s a tough spot to start, but if any horse has the grit to push through the crowd, it’s him.
2. Commandment (6-1)
Coming off a massive victory at the Florida Derby, Commandment is a powerhouse. He has this vibrant, unstoppable energy that reminds me of why we love this sport. He’s a co-second favorite for a reason: he’s got the speed and the "look of a winner" that horsemen talk about in hushed, respectful tones.
3. Further Ado (6-1)
Further Ado is a "stalker." He’s smart, tactical, and knows exactly when to make his move. After winning the Blue Grass Stakes, he’s proven that he has the stamina for the Derby’s distance. Watching him run is like watching a masterclass in patience and precision.

Connection and heritage—the heart of our Western Heritage Collection.
A Garland of Traditions
Of course, the Derby is famously known as the "Run for the Roses." This nickname, coined back in 1925, refers to the incredible blanket of roses draped over the winner. Did you know that the garland contains over 400 red roses? Each one is individually sewn into a green plush backing, and they even include a "crown" of roses to symbolize the struggle and heart it takes to win.

There’s something so poetic about the combination of such a rugged, powerful athlete being honored with something as delicate as a rose. It’s that balance of strength and beauty that I strive to capture in my jewelry. I believe our stories: much like the history of the Thoroughbred: are made of both the tough miles and the beautiful blooms we find along the way.
Carrying the Spirit with You
If you’re an equestrian at heart, or if the Derby simply stirs something soulful within you, our Horse Necklace from the Western Heritage Collection was made specifically for you.

This piece is a true labor of love. It features a detailed horse head set against a shimmering, iridescent background, all encased in a glossy, teardrop-shaped resin pendant. Because each piece is handcrafted, no two are ever exactly alike: just like the horses they celebrate. When you hold it in your hand, you can feel the weight of the story it tells. It’s a way to keep that equestrian spirit alive long after the last horse has crossed the finish line and the roses have begun to fade.
I’ve always believed that jewelry should be more than just an accessory; it should be a keepsake of a journey. Whether it’s a memory of your first pony or the excitement of a Kentucky Derby 2026 party with friends, these pieces are designed to preserve those feelings forever.
Why Handcrafted Matters
In a world that moves so fast: sometimes as fast as a Thoroughbred in a sprint: there is something deeply grounding about owning something handmade. When I work in my studio, I slow down. I reflect. I think about the person who will eventually wear the piece and the "elegant journey" they are on.
Our keepsakes are not mass-produced in a factory. They are one-of-a-kind creations born from a place of passion. Using high-quality resin and carefully selected elements, I aim to create wearable art that feels like a warm hug for your soul. From our horse-themed pieces to our flowers and nature collection, everything is made with the intention of celebrating life's most meaningful moments.
