From Ranch to Resin: How My Western Heritage Shapes Every Piece I Create

If you were to walk onto our ranch at sunrise, you’d hear the low nicker of horses, the crunch of dry earth under boots, and the gentle rustle of the wind moving through the sagebrush. This is where I find my peace, and honestly, it’s where Abood Elegant Journeys truly began.
I’ve always believed that life is a collection of journeys: some are long treks across open country, and others are quiet, tender moments spent in the barn. For me, those journeys are paved with grit, sun-bleached wood, and the unconditional bond between a rider and her horse. But how does a girl who spends her days covered in dust and hay end up making glossy, vibrant resin jewelry?
The answer is simple: I wanted to find a way to carry the spirit of the ranch with me, wherever the trail might lead.

The Grit Behind the Gloss
Ranching isn’t just a job; it’s a heritage. It’s a lifestyle that demands a certain kind of toughness, a "wild and fierce" spirit that doesn't shy away from hard work or a sudden thunderstorm. I’ve spent more hours in a saddle than I have in a swivel chair, and that rugged reality is the foundation of everything I create.
Some of the deepest roots of that story were planted in Arizona. I can still picture the mornings so clearly they feel sun-warmed in my hands: checking my boots for scorpions before I slid them on, feeding hay, and stepping out into that desert quiet that never really felt empty. It had its own heartbeat. There was the scent of orange blossoms drifting through the air at just the right time, and before a monsoon, this soft, strange sweetness I always think of as a vanilla smell. If you know, you know. The desert would give you that little warning, like it was taking a deep breath before showing its dramatic side.
Those trails out to Goldfield and Bull Head Mine shaped me. So did the sight of the Superstition Mountains—My Mountains—holding steady in the distance like old guardians. Arizona taught me that beauty and danger often ride side by side. There were honery coyotes with plenty of attitude, geckos doing push-ups like they owned the place, and rattlesnakes that earned every ounce of respect. Out there, you paid attention. You learned not to bluster your way through the land. You listened. You noticed. You gave ancient things the space they deserved.
And the colors—oh, the colors—are still with me. Arizona sunsets poured themselves across the sky in pinks, purples, and oranges so vivid they barely looked real. Then the full moon would rise over the mountains and turn everything silver and still. Those are not just pretty memories to me; they are directly tied to the palette and feeling behind the Western Heritage Collection. The shimmer, the glow, the warm desert tones, the dusky depth—I carry all of that to my workbench.
When I sit down at my workbench to pour resin, I’m not just making a necklace. I’m thinking about those falling mining cabins with all their rugged history still clinging to the wood. I’m thinking about century-old Saguaros standing tall with a quiet kind of wisdom. I’m thinking about the way desert beauty never begs for attention, but completely steals it anyway. In so many ways, those memories are literally what I’m trying to preserve in resin art: the grit, the color, the silence, the soul.
Every piece in our Western Heritage Collection is a direct reflection of that grit. The process of working with resin is a lot like training a horse: it requires patience, a steady hand, and a deep respect for the materials. You can’t rush it. You have to wait for the right moment to layer in the shimmer, the botanicals, or the charms. It’s a slow, deliberate practice that encourages me to appreciate the beauty in the waiting.
Capturing the Spirit: The Western Heritage Horse Necklace
If you’ve looked through our Original Creations, you might have noticed a recurring theme: the horse. To any rancher, a horse isn't just an animal; they are a partner, a confidant, and a soulmate with four hooves.
One horse who left his hoofprint all over my story was Billy. Billy was the kind of horse who could humble you fast. I’ll just say this: he nearly took a rider off a cliff once, so he was not exactly out there auditioning for “gentle trail horse of the year.” But with me, he was a dream. That contrast taught me something I’ve carried ever since: sometimes the ones with the rough edges aren’t bad-hearted, they’re just asking to be understood properly.
A lot of what I learned came from real cowboys, the kind who didn’t need to say much because their horsemanship did the talking. They taught me to pay attention, to ride the horse in front of me, and to listen harder than I assumed. Billy had an injury, and because of that, I chose a hackamore over a bit. It wasn’t about being fancy or different. It was about empathy. It was about respecting what his body had been through and finding a gentler way to communicate. Funny enough, that horse also helped me discover I get along best with the honery ones. The spicy ones. The opinionated souls who make you earn their trust and then give you something real.
The Western Heritage Horse Necklace was born out of that exact kind of bond. I wanted to create something that felt both lightweight and deeply meaningful. Each teardrop pendant features a detailed horse head set against a shimmering, iridescent background that reminds me of the way the light dances off the water in the trough on a clear morning.

Working with resin calls on that same grit and tenderness. Some pieces behave beautifully right away, and some need a little extra patience, a steadier hand, and a willingness to meet them where they are. That might sound funny if we’re talking about jewelry instead of horses, but honestly, the lesson holds. Billy taught me not to force beauty. He taught me to work with character, not against it. And I think that’s part of why every piece I make feels so personal: I’m not chasing perfection. I’m honoring spirit.
When you wear one of these pieces, you’re wearing a story. It’s a keepsake designed to remind you of your own strength and the journeys you’ve navigated. Whether you’re out on the ranch or headed into the city, it’s a little piece of home that sits right against your heart.
Nature’s Preservation: From the Field to the Studio
On the ranch, beauty isn't always polished. It’s often found in the small, organic details: a vibrant petal, a unique leaf, or the delicate wings of a dragonfly. I’ve always been drawn to the concept of preservation. There is something so magical about taking a fleeting moment of nature’s brilliance and suspending it in time forever.
Our Flowers & Nature collection is where my love for the land really shines. Take, for example, our sunflower pendants. Sunflowers are the ultimate symbol of the West: bold, bright, and unyielding. By setting real pressed sunflowers into deep, dark resin, I’m able to highlight their vibrant yellow hues in a way that feels modern yet timeless.
Using real botanicals means that no two pieces are ever exactly the same. Just like every horse has its own personality and every ranch has its own landscape, every pendant is a one-of-a-kind creation. I love the idea that when you choose a piece from Abood Elegant Journeys, you’re getting something that belongs only to you.
The Heart of the Matter: More Than Just Jewelry
While the ranch is my primary muse, my heart belongs to all the animals that make our lives whole. This is why I created the Cat & Pet Muse category. Any rancher will tell you that the barn cats and the loyal dogs are just as much a part of the family as anyone else.
I wanted to bring that same "From Ranch to Resin" philosophy to our pet-inspired pieces. Whether it’s a pair of mellow cat silhouette earrings or a custom keepsake, these designs are meant to celebrate the playful and sentimental bonds we share with our furry companions.

A Heartfelt Invitation
Creating this jewelry has been a journey of its own. It’s allowed me to blend my two worlds: the rugged, dusty life of a rancher and the delicate, creative life of an artist. It’s taught me that grit and beauty aren't opposites; they are two sides of the same coin. You can’t have the gloss without the sanding, and you can’t have the elegant journey without a little dirt on your boots.
When I’m in my studio, I often think about the person who will eventually wear the piece I’m working on. I hope it brings them a sense of comfort. I hope it feels like a warm hug from a friend or a quiet moment of reflection in a busy day.
Every piece I create is a piece of my story, but once it leaves the ranch, it becomes a part of yours. I invite you to explore our All Products page and see if there’s a story that speaks to you.

Whether you are drawn to the "Wild & Fierce" energy of the horses or the "Tender & Vibrant" beauty of the flowers, know that each piece was made with love, respect for the heritage, and a whole lot of ranch-inspired heart.
Thank you for being a part of this journey with me. I can’t wait to see which keepsake you choose to help tell your own story.
With love and gratitude from the ranch,
Katie Owner/Operator, Abood Elegant Journeys
