Dahlias: A Beautiful Reminder That Kindness Can Bloom Forever

Sometimes the most beautiful moments in life arrive unexpectedly.

Last night, I received a beautiful dahlia from one of the guests at the hotel where I work. It was a simple gesture, but one that genuinely touched my heart.

As someone who loves flowers, nature, and creating handmade treasures, I immediately began thinking about how I could preserve this lovely flower rather than simply watch it fade. And that is where today's Blooming Monday story begins.

The Dahlia: One of Nature's Most Magnificent Creations

Dahlias are among the most breathtaking flowers in the garden. Their intricate layers of petals, remarkable symmetry, and extraordinary variety of colors make them look almost too perfect to be real.

Native to Mexico and Central America, dahlias have been admired and cultivated for centuries. Today, thousands of cultivated varieties offer everything from small, delicate blossoms to enormous dinner-plate dahlias that can grow nearly a foot across.

Some have perfectly rounded petals arranged like delicate honeycombs. Others feature long, pointed petals that resemble bursts of fireworks. Still others have soft, flowing petals that give them an almost romantic appearance. Each flower seems to have its own personality.

What Do Dahlias Symbolize?

Dahlias are often associated with kindness, gratitude, inner strength, elegance, commitment, and positive change. Flower symbolism varies across cultures and traditions, but I particularly love the connection between dahlias and kindness. After all, the flower I received was given simply as a thoughtful gesture. And sometimes those are the gifts we remember most.

A Little Dahlia History

Did you know that the dahlia is the national flower of Mexico? The flower takes its name from Swedish botanist Anders Dahl, and it belongs to the Asteraceae family, alongside sunflowers, daisies, and chrysanthemums.

Dahlias grow from tuberous roots and typically bloom from midsummer into autumn, often continuing until the first hard frost. Here in Virginia, dahlias can provide a gorgeous final celebration of color before winter arrives.

Preserving a Dahlia's Beauty in Resin

As a resin artist, I see flowers a little differently. Where someone else might see a beautiful blossom that will eventually wilt, I see the possibility of preserving a moment in time. That is exactly what I hope to do with the dahlia I received.

My plan is to carefully dry the flower, preserving as much of its natural beauty as possible, and eventually incorporate it into a handmade resin creation.

Preserving flowers in resin requires patience. Fresh flowers contain moisture, which can cause discoloration, cloudiness, or deterioration when sealed inside resin. Dahlias present an especially interesting challenge because their numerous layers of petals can trap moisture deep inside the blossom.

I hope to preserve the entire bloom in one large resin keepsake, capturing the delicate details that make this particular flower so beautiful. And perhaps the most meaningful part is knowing the story behind it.

More Than Just a Flower

One of the things I love most about handmade art is that every creation can carry a story. A flower from a wedding bouquet. A blossom from a grandmother's garden. A flower picked during a memorable afternoon. Or, in my case, a beautiful dahlia given unexpectedly by a thoughtful guest.

At Abood Elegant Journeys, nature is one of my greatest inspirations. From delicate floral designs to handcrafted resin jewelry and keepsakes, I love finding ways to celebrate the beauty surrounding us.

Not every flower needs to become a piece of jewelry. Sometimes it can simply become a small work of art, a decorative keepsake, or a treasured reminder of someone's kindness.

A Blooming Monday Thought

Flowers remind us that beauty doesn't have to last forever to make a lasting impression. But sometimes, with a little creativity and patience, we can preserve a piece of that beauty for years to come.

As I begin the process of drying my dahlia, I'll be thinking about the thoughtful gesture that brought it into my life. And when it finally becomes a resin creation, it will be more than a preserved flower. It will be a little reminder that kindness is everywhere, often appearing when we least expect it.

Until next Blooming Monday, take a moment to appreciate the flowers around you. And remember, even the smallest act of kindness can leave a lasting impression.

With love and creativity, Abood Elegant Journeys — Handcrafted with Heart. Inspired by Nature.
