Every Saturday here at Abood Elegant Journeys, we like to take a little breath. We step away from the workbench, set down the resin molds, and let the dust of the week settle. In our world, we call it "Caturday." It’s a time to celebrate the furry muses who inspire so much of the love and heartbeat behind our jewelry. Today, I want to tell you a story that is very close to my heart. It’s a story about a "King" who lost his crown and found it again in the most unexpected way.
This is the legend of Benny.
A Ghost from Arizona
To understand Benny, you first have to understand Bug. Bug was my companion for many years, a soul-cat I brought with me all the way from Arizona. He had those unmistakable Maine Coon markings, the tufted ears, the majestic ruff, and a presence that filled a room. When Bug passed, he left a hole in my heart the size of the Grand Canyon.
Fast forward to a day when my roommate and I were visiting Petco. I wasn’t looking for a new cat; I was just going through the motions of a normal afternoon. But then, I saw him. Sitting in the window of the Animal Hope Alliance display was a massive, beautiful creature that looked like a literal ghost of Bug.
It was love at first sight. I didn’t even have to think about it. I called Animal Hope Alliance right then and there and told them to send someone down immediately, I had adoption paperwork to sign.
The Royal Pedigree: The B&B King
When I started talking to Betty at Animal Hope Alliance, I realized Benny wasn’t just any rescue cat. He was a purebred Maine Coon with a history as rich and colorful as a piece of vintage turquoise.
Apparently, Benny’s journey started with a young girl who brought him home, only for her mother to say, "No way!" (I know, I can't imagine saying no to that face either!). From there, he was rehomed to the owners of a very prestigious Bed and Breakfast in Christiansburg.
In that B&B, Benny lived like true royalty. He didn't just have a bed; he had a kingdom. He was pampered by professional groomers, fed only the finest gourmet cat food, and surrounded by a rotating cast of admirers. When he eventually came to the rescue, he arrived with more luggage than most humans! He had his very own "Moulin Rouge" themed bag, stuffed to the brim with high-end brushes, ceramic bowls, and an assortment of toys that would make any kitten jealous.
The first time I held him, I cried. He felt so much like Bug, but as I soon learned, Benny was his own man. He wasn't much of a cuddler back then. He was a "cat's cat": dignified, a bit aloof, and very aware of his royal status.
A Romance for the Ages: The Maine Coon and the Torti
While Benny might have been a bit reserved with the humans at first, there was one member of the household who captured his heart instantly: Tasha.
Tasha is our resident Tortoiseshell (Torti), and for Benny, it was love at first sight. We call it his "Maine Coon Crush." This giant, 25-pound king became absolutely smitten with her. He took it upon himself to be her personal stylist, constantly grooming her and washing her ears with the utmost devotion.
They would run and play through the house, a blur of long Maine Coon fur and mottled Torti patterns. Of course, Tasha is a lady who knows her boundaries. When Benny’s affection gets a little too overwhelming, she’ll grab his massive head and give him some "bunny kicks" with her back feet. She keeps her claws tucked in, though: it’s all in good fun. He is, quite officially, her boyfriend.

As they’ve grown older, I’ve had to step in occasionally. Tasha is asthmatic, and when Benny gets too caught up in their wrestling matches, I have to remind him to play gentle. But even now, he still watches over her with those big, soulful eyes.

The Great Health Scare: A King in Exile
Life has a way of throwing curves at you, and Benny’s story took a heartbreaking turn a few years ago. When I moved out of my previous living situation, Benny stayed behind with my former roommate for a short period. There was a lapse in time before I was asked to come over and help with feeding.
When I walked into that house, my heart shattered.
Benny, the 25-pound king of the B&B, had withered away to just 12 pounds. He was a skeleton of his former self. When I tried to give him canned food, he would lean down to eat, start drooling, and then shake his head in visible pain. He couldn't keep anything down because his mouth was a war zone of infection.
I didn't hesitate. I scooped him up and took him straight to the veterinarian. The diagnosis was severe: he had a massive mouth infection that was causing him excruciating pain every time he tried to chew. My old roommate didn't have the time or the means to manage the rigorous medication schedule and the back-and-forth vet trips required for his recovery.
So, Benny came home with me. Permanently.
It was a bittersweet homecoming. I was devastated that he had suffered so much, but I was overjoyed to have him back under my wing where I could protect him. The vet determined that the only way to save him was to pull almost all of his teeth. Today, Benny is a "gummy" king: he has all but his two bottom canines removed.

The 30-Pound Recovery
You would think a cat with no teeth would struggle, but Benny took it in stride. He transitioned to a soft food diet and started putting on weight: and he didn't stop!
These days, Benny is a magnificent 30 pounds (or maybe a little more, don't tell him I said that!). He has reclaimed his throne as the ruler of the house. He spends his days playing with BK, continuing his lifelong "swoon" over Tasha, and occasionally terrorizing poor Tribbles just to remind everyone who's boss.
The most beautiful part of his recovery wasn't just the physical weight he gained; it was the change in his spirit. The "aloof" B&B cat is gone. In his place is a boy who actively seeks out attention. He loves to sleep at the foot of my bed, and more often than not, I’ll wake up to find his heavy, fluffy head resting right on my feet. It’s his way of saying, "I’m here, and I’m safe."

Preserving the Love
Benny’s journey from a prestigious B&B to a 12-pound rescue and finally to a 30-pound lap-warmer is why I do what I do at Abood Elegant Journeys. We believe in preserving memories. Whether it’s a lock of fur, a flower from a special day, or a piece of jewelry that reminds you of a pet’s spirit, we understand that these aren't just "things." They are stories.
Our Pets & Muses collection is inspired by the Bennys and the Tashas of the world. Each piece is handcrafted with the same unconditional love that Benny gives me every night when he falls asleep on my feet.

A Legacy of Love over Luxury
Benny might not go to a professional groomer every week anymore. He might not eat out of the most expensive ceramic bowls or live in a fancy Christiansburg B&B. But what he has now is something far more valuable: a family that loves him unconditionally, a pack of feline friends to keep him young, and a forever home where he never has to worry about being hungry or in pain again.
His "Moulin Rouge" bag is long gone, but his crown is firmly back on his head.
If you have a rescue story or a "furry muse" who has changed your life, I invite you to share it with us. We love hearing about the journeys your pets have taken to find their way into your hearts. After all, life is just a series of elegant journeys, and we’re just here to help you remember the best parts.
Until next Caturday, keep holding those stories close to your heart.
