Caturday Chronicles: Seeing the World Through a Cat’s Eyes 🐾👁️
Updated: Sep 29

Have you ever wondered what your cat actually sees when they stare across the room at absolutely nothing?
As cat people, we know the look.
You follow their eyes. You look behind you. You check the wall.
Nothing.
The cat, meanwhile, is completely convinced there is something there.
Cats experience the world very differently than we do. Their eyesight is designed less for admiring tiny details and more for doing what cats were born to do: detect movement, navigate dim environments, and hunt.
Cats Are Made for the Dark
Cats can't actually see in complete darkness, but they are remarkably good at seeing in low light.
Their eyes are designed to gather available light efficiently, which is one reason your cat can confidently wander through a dim house while you're trying not to walk into the furniture.
That ability comes from several adaptations, including a structure behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum. It reflects light back through the retina, giving the eye another opportunity to use it.
It's also responsible for that familiar glow you sometimes see when light hits a cat's eyes at night.
Do Cats See Color?
Yes—but not quite the way we do.
Cats aren't living in a completely black-and-white world. They can distinguish some colors, particularly in the blue and yellow ranges, but their color vision isn't as rich as human color vision.
And that's perfectly fine for a cat.
Color isn't nearly as important to them as movement, contrast, sound, scent, and location.
Those Whiskers Are Doing More Than Looking Cute
A cat doesn't depend on eyesight alone to understand its surroundings.
Whiskers are incredibly sensitive and help cats detect nearby objects and changes in air movement. Their hearing is also exceptional, and their sense of smell gives them information about their environment that we humans completely miss.
That combination becomes especially important for cats with limited vision.
Which brings me to my boy, BK.
BK Has Always Seen the World a Little Differently

BK was born with one good eye and another eye that he has never been able to see through.
On Monday, that non-seeing eye has to be surgically removed.
A
s his cat mom, of course I'm worried about him. That's what we do when one of our babies needs surgery.
But here's the beautiful thing about BK:
He doesn't know he's different.
God made him the way he is
His world has always been the world he knows.
He moves around the house, finds his favorite places, interacts with the other cats and gets into ordinary cat mischief. And anyone who knows BK knows about one of his personal techniques—when he's looking for his water, he'll dip his paw in to find it.
He figured out his own way.
Cats are extraordinarily adaptable creatures. A cat who has lived with vision in only one eye can use memory, hearing, scent, whiskers and that remaining eye to navigate life remarkably well.
BK isn't losing the way he sees his world Monday.
He's simply saying goodbye to an eye that never showed him that world in the first place.
Maybe "Seeing" Is Bigger Than Eyesight
Living with animals teaches us things if we're willing to pay attention.
BK reminds me that experiencing the world isn't always about having everything work exactly the way it's "supposed" to.
Sometimes it's about adapting.
Learning.
Trusting what you do have.
And occasionally sticking your paw in the water bowl just to make sure it's still there. ❤️
So this Caturday is dedicated to BK—and to all the one-eyed, partially sighted and blind cats who prove every single day that a wonderful life doesn't have to look exactly the same for everyone.
Keep my little black cat in your thoughts and prayers as he heads into surgery Monday.
And BK?
We'll see you on the other side, buddy.
Exactly the way you've always seen us. 🐈⬛❤️
